Tree Trimming and Pruning in Salt Lake City
Trimming and pruning are related but they're not the same thing, and the difference matters for your trees. Trimming removes growth for clearance or appearance. Pruning removes dead, crossing, or structurally weak wood to help a tree grow with better form and less risk of failure. Both have their place, and doing either one wrong causes problems that take years to show up.
We follow ANSI A300 pruning standards on every job. Those standards specify how much live wood can be removed at one time, where cuts should be made relative to the branch collar, and how to avoid creating wounds that let decay into the tree. Cutting too deep, leaving stubs, or removing more than a third of the live canopy in a single session all cause long-term damage that isn't always obvious right away.
We don't top trees. Topping is one of the most damaging things you can do to a mature tree. It triggers rapid, weak regrowth that is poorly attached to the trunk, opens large wounds that decay from the inside, and typically shortens the tree's life by years. If a previous company has topped a tree on your property, we can assess the damage and talk through what, if anything, can be done to improve its structure going forward.
Salt Lake City has a lot of mature cottonwoods, Siberian elms, and ornamental trees in established neighborhoods. These trees respond well to proper pruning and can stay healthy for decades with the right care. Timing matters too. Most pruning is best done in late winter before bud break, though dead wood and hazard branches can come out any time of year.
